Courageous Advocacy

Each year, St John’s First School undertakes a variety of projects designed to develop pupils as courageous advocates, empowering them to stand up for causes they believe in. These initiatives encourage pupils to actively engage with and make a positive impact on their local, national, and global communities, fostering a deep sense of social responsibility and compassion.

Further information about some of these meaningful projects can be found below.

Parkinson's Day

One of our wonderful teachers, Mrs Wright, was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Each year the children ask if they can raise money to help the charity and to show Mrs Wright how much we love her. Mrs Wright is such an inspiration to us all that we celebrate Parkinson's Day as a positive day.

Good Shepherd Food Bank

St John’s First School maintains a strong partnership with the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Wolverhampton as part of our commitment to community outreach and social justice. Each year during the Christmas season, we organise a Reverse Advent Calendar, where pupils are invited to bring in different essential items weekly. These donations are then carefully packed and delivered to the food bank to support individuals and families in need.

In addition, during our annual Harvest celebrations, we invite families to contribute food items, which are also sent to the Good Shepherd Food Bank. This year, a representative from the organisation visited the school to speak with the children, providing valuable insight into how the donations are distributed and the impact they have on the lives of those who receive them. This experience enabled pupils to make a tangible connection between their acts of giving and the positive difference they can make in the lives of others.

Aqua Aid

St John’s First School is proud to have sponsored the construction of an Elephant Pump in Zimbabwe, a sustainable water source that provides vital support to a local village. This initiative was thought out by our Trust health and safety manager, who has fitted filtered water cylinders in all our schools, which ensure pupils have access to fresh, clean drinking water each day.

The Elephant Pump plays a crucial role in the Zimbabwean community, supplying water for irrigation, domestic use, laundry, and the care of livestock. Through learning about the function and impact of the pump, our pupils developed a deeper understanding of global water inequality and a renewed appreciation for the everyday privilege of access to clean, running water. This project forms part of our wider commitment to global citizenship and developing compassionate, outward-looking young people.
